Martello Tower - Their purpose was to protect, by heavy gun fire, the vulnerable coasts of south east England against invasion during the Napoleonic wars, and they were built between 1805 and 1812. The total number of Martello Towers built was 105, of which 47 remain; 29 of these are of south coast style, 17 east coast style, and one quatrefoil.
